I've always had admiration for people who can handle spicy food. Look at them keep calm as the sweat beads up on their face, I'd think, as I stayed clear of even a single pepper flake. Then I traveled to Mexico, where chile peppers have a hierarchy all their own. “No pica,” (“It's not spicy”) the waitress would assure me, even though it always did pica, and sometimes a LOT. So I was curious which pepper they considered hot? I got my answer when I tried an “arbol" (tree) chile pepper. I JUST ATE FIRE, I thought, convinced that my lips were melting off. Once I recovered, I finally understood the allure: there's a strange thrill to it - plus a lot of times it just makes the food taste better. I had a lot of fun creating my Mexican Firecracker design, which I proudly wear, because now I can say that I'm one of the brave ones!
